I was at the regular school student council meeting today at lunch, and they want to work with us to hold events which the students from the entire school feel welcome at. Apparently, the main school students feel very excluded and want to feel welcome at more school events. (Although they ARE already allowed at everything other than the gala. AND i mentioned that the coffee houses are open to EVERYONE. including the community)

I would just say that they shouldn't be able to work with us, they aren't Byng Arts anyways. If they really want to work with us then maybe regulars should come to coffee houses......

I think there are potentials for the two student councils to merge and work together. However, it really wouldn't make sense for the regular student council to host the coffee house and the theme days. All students are welcome to the events, but we really don't need two student councils to do those events. I mean, I'm not going to be mean and tell them that they can't tag along, but I just think that the "labour forces" could be efficiently distributed. Maybe the main school student council should fundraise for improving environment and global warming and such. But I was also thinking that perhaps at the end of the year, the two student council could merge and create one super event. We could have the whole year to plan for it (not to say that the other events are not going to be planned or anything), so that we could always keep that in the back of our heads. I will hopefully be able to present a proposal by next week with my idea, and I encourage everyone to also present proposals.

It could be a huge community event in which we display and sell crafts, artwork, and we'll have different groups (musical and theatre) performing at different times. We could also have stalls fundraising for charities and other things they do at fairs... we would have to investigate by going to some school fairs. I think it would be interesting...

That sounds like a really fun idea. (but would probably require a lot of organization!) And would be really nice since it does allow students to exhibit their artistic talent. Also, I don't think Byng has ever had any fairs in the past before and this would certainly be something new and exciting. As for the regular student council- I think we really do just need emphasize to the whole student body that the coffeehouses and theme days are completely open to everyone. Collaborations do seem like they would complicate things- but perhaps like Jack mentioned, we could work together on some big event at the end of the year.

I like the idea but like what Cindey said it would require quite a bit of work. But as a fund raiser that's brilliant. I say we look into that after the gala.......

I think a) that a byng arts fair would be a good idea. b) we could sell some of the stuff (student or community works) with all or a portion of the proceeds going to a good cause, possibly one that would relate to the school goal of reducing our environmental footprint. Aspects of this could also be administered to by the main student council, and there should be lots of publicity for it, specifically within the school, to encourage a broad range of students to be active participants in hosting/facilitating this event.

Wow guys you are a bunch of brainiacts!! (good thing) lol tired, sorry bout typing bad)
Maybe it could be called a BYNG FAIR! insted of bA etc.
It would be cool to have more coffee houses this year too. Maybe if they help with the whole talking about it and making people come it would work better. Like have it be like presented by BA student council with help from the Byng student council....
Another Idea, a crafts fair is a lot of work, maybe a massive coffee house in the gym, that way we would need the reg. council to help (a lot of work) plus more room. We could invite like a WHOLE neighbour hood and make it awesome and totally cooL!!??
I duno, just throwing out ideas!

I don't know if anyone here goes to the annual St. George's fair, but I think by having it more in that style, and less of an arts fair would be better. An arts fair is great for byng arts, but I think that for a community fair, a carnival type of thing would be more popular (especially with younger children). We could still have a craft SECTION, and music, but not an artsy fair if we want everyone to come.

We could definitely open it up to other activities as well as the arts. However, just because St. Georges did it that we doesn't mean we have to copy them. We haven't really started planning for it yet, so lets not restrict our creativity already. Lets wait till the gala settles down, have a party (potluck?), and then get ourselves geared towards planning the rest of the year. I think we should definitely have a coffee house and an end of the year event. We would also be addressing questions including "will we plan anything more events in between the coffee house and the end of the year event?" and "would we want to open ourselves up to issues that don't just revolve around events, like fundraising for good causes?"
